- <p> DIED. JAMES T. AUBREY JR. 75, highly successful but controversial
- former president of CBS television; of a heart attack; in Los
- Angeles. Named to head the network in the wake of the quiz-show
- scandals in 1959, Aubrey guided CBS through a succession of
- No. 1 seasons, with his emphasis on rustic, mass-audience fare
- like The Andy Griffith Show, The Beverly Hillbillies and Gomer
- Pyle. Known and feared for his autocratic, sometimes ruthless
- management style, Aubrey also came under suspicion for allegedly
- giving favored treatment to TV-producer friends. He was fired
- in 1965 but later resurfaced as the president of MGM from 1969
- to 1973.
