  15. <p>     DIED. JAMES T. AUBREY JR. 75, highly successful but controversial
  16. former president of CBS television; of a heart attack; in Los
  17. Angeles. Named to head the network in the wake of the quiz-show
  18. scandals in 1959, Aubrey guided CBS through a succession of
  19. No. 1 seasons, with his emphasis on rustic, mass-audience fare
  20. like The Andy Griffith Show, The Beverly Hillbillies and Gomer
  21. Pyle. Known and feared for his autocratic, sometimes ruthless
  22. management style, Aubrey also came under suspicion for allegedly
  23. giving favored treatment to TV-producer friends. He was fired
  24. in 1965 but later resurfaced as the president of MGM from 1969
  25. to 1973.
